Job Description

The role involves a wide variety of duties including:

  • Provide technical radiological advice to external clients in a variety of sectors (mainly nuclear);
  • Production of technical documents including Radiation Risk Assessments, Local Rules, dose assessments and ALARP reports;
  • Review of selected design solutions and elaboration of technical documentation;
  • Advising on compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations and managing contractual and financial resource if required;
  • Support safety management and radiation protection activities;
  • Perform analysis of the barriers to radioactive releases, radiation protection plan and emergency radiation protection management;
  • Participate in the preparation of bids, studies and projects regarding radiation protection support;
  • Advise on fuel management and storage;
  • Network with other offices of Mott MacDonald;
  • Travel internationally for internal and external meetings, and site visits.

Candidate Specification

Competencies/skills:

  • MSc degree in Nuclear technology or other relevant discipline;
  • Extensive professional experience in energy/nuclear/safety projects;
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of ALARP in radiation protection;
  • Experience of radiation protection and nuclear safety requirements, engineering, design, safety case and nuclear facility operation;
  • Professional experience in the Nuclear/Heavy industry sector;
  • Certified (or working towards) as an RPA under the RPA2000 scheme (UK specific) or equivalent one;
  • Experience of radiation protection practices and nuclear safety requirements, engineering, design, safety case and nuclear facility operation; decommissioning;
  • Understanding of key risks during the design stages, operation and decommissioning phases and mitigations that support the ALARP argument on radiation protection;
  • Experience of regulatory engagement and external stakeholder management;
  • Ability to work across the UK and internationally for short visits to suit business needs;
  • Good working knowledge of legislation, policy, regulatory guidance and standards relating to radiation protection on nuclear sites;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English. Working proficiency in any other language is highly advantageous (German, French, Russian);
  • Ability to work independently and in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams;
  • Availability to travel internationally, including for short secondments in other Mott MacDonald offices;
  • May be required to work on projects that are subject to passing a security clearance check.
