Researcher on Electrification and Industry Decarbonization

SEI - Stockholm Environment Institute

Stockholm, Sweden

We are recruiting a new researcher to work with the low carbon industrial transition and transport electrification. The researcher will be part of SEI’s growing Energy and Industry Transitions (EIT) team as well as the Secretariat for the Leadership Group for Industrial Transition (LeadIT).

Type of contract: One-year temporary position with possibility for renewal
Deadline: 31 March 2023
Start date: As soon as possible

The projects

We are recruiting a new researcher working with the ongoing low carbon transition. You will be part of SEI’s growing Energy and Industry Transitions team (EIT) as well as the Secretariat for the Leadership Group for Industrial Transition (LeadIT). The successful candidate will initially focus on the following two projects on equal terms:

The first project focuses on analyzing charging infrastructure demand developments for different user groups and transport market segments. The researcher is expected to contribute to the team’s ongoing research work on accelerating the transition to electrified transport using analytical skills for interpreting results and engaging with stakeholders of the field.

The second project is the SEI hosted LeadIT secretariat. The Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) gathers countries and companies that are committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions from industry by 2050. The secretariat work covers a range of hard to abate industries, focusing on the steel and cement industries in particular, and the work is often done in close collaboration with other international institutions, including, e.g., UN entities and the G20 organization.

The role

The work includes carrying out research and translating research to policy relevant insights. In the charging infrastructure project, this means carrying out a synthesis of best available evidence from Swedish and international studies. The researcher will have a central role in reporting project insights to decision-makers regarding how charging infrastructure planning can be improved. In LeadIT, the role includes working closely with the other LeadIT secretariat members on, for example, industry roadmaps and formulating briefs and policy recommendations on issues at the frontier of the global industrial green transition as well as follow the international work in the field.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Review, analyze and synthesize evidence on charging infrastructure needs across different vehicle and user groups for accelerating transport electrification;
  • Formulating briefs and policy recommendations on transport electrification, industrial green transition, or road maps for the green transition;
  • Develop and contribute with policy knowledge, such as tracking the regulatory initiatives in EU influencing the industrial transition, sharing this in the LeadIT secretariat team and develop LeadITs offer to the members;
  • Together with other team members of the LeadIT secretariat, formulate policy advise for the hard to abate industry sectors, from a holistic and multisectoral viewpoint;
  • Engaging with stakeholders and contributing to identifying new research areas to further explore energy system decarbonization, industry transition and equitable access to infrastructure.

Who you are

The ideal candidate has a couple of years´ experience from either research or policy making, and an education or otherwise tangible experience of working with low carbon transitions. The work requires both technical and/or policy know-how and interest. Experience of heavy industry sectors and transport electrification is desirable. A broad interest, flexibility, and a keen interest of the ongoing energy transition across sectors that need to decarbonize is needed.

You have a strong interest, and preferably a proven track record, in delivering in complex projects and working with multicultural and multifunctional teams as well as multiple stakeholders in the field of environmental sustainability. You are motivated by the opportunity to contribute to research, policy development and implementation of projects in the fields of low carbon transition and policy in a dynamic international context.

To succeed in this role, you need proven expertise in analysis, and interest in developing and influencing environmental and climate-related policymaking, on a national and/or international level. Having previous experience of similar roles is an advantage, but not a requirement.

You are proactive, self-driven and structured with a willingness to learn, listen and share. You are goal-oriented and able to multitask and meet deadlines effectively. You value maintaining good working relationships internally and with project stakeholders.

  • MSc in a relevant subject (environmental science, economics, industrial economy, energy systems, political science or equivalent). Candidates with a PhD are also welcome to apply;
  • Some work experience in relevant field;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Ideally, the candidate would also bring:

  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary diverse teams, including teams comprising of researchers, technical roles, and policymakers;
  • Proven capacity for creative and innovative research and policy analysis focusing on low-carbon innovation, in either the energy sector, mobility sector, or heavy industry sector;
  • Work experience in developing country contexts;
  • Experience from a multilateral organisation or industry experience is an advantage;
  • Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage.
