Environmental and Sustainability Manager

Responsibilities:
- Manage the project Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) and work with the Site Manager to integrate requirements in line with client expectations and Winthrop’s corporate sustainability goals;
- Review all construction method statements, processes, and procedures to ensure environmental risks are assessed and mitigated appropriately;
- Deliver toolbox talks and guidance to site staff on environmental best practices and required onsite behaviours;
- Provide training on environmental and social sensitivities, including appropriate procedures in cases of public interaction;
- Identify spill kit requirements, ensure training is completed, and confirm that equipment is adequately maintained and available;
- Conduct emergency preparedness exercises (with H&S and Site Manager), identify weaknesses, and implement improvement plans;
- Review and monitor local NOx/ NH3 emissions in line with the Dutch Nature Conservation Act (Wet natuurbescherming);
- Ensure all drains and potential watercourse entry points are protected; verify that all discharges are clean water and take corrective action where required;
- Work closely with the H&S team to ensure all cross-over environmental and safety risks are effectively managed;
- Provide regular site presence to oversee medium- and high-risk tasks and operations;
- Perform routine site walkovers with the Site Manager, issue written findings, and agree corrective actions with realistic completion dates based on risk;
- Produce monthly Environmental Progress Reports, including incidents, resolutions, inspections, and interventions;
- Conduct audit checks of permits and oversee the site complaints register;
- Promote best practice in environmental management, sharing lessons learned and incident feedback;
- Support the Site Manager and attend all relevant client and project decision-making meetings;
- Exercise authority to stop works where environmental non-compliance or unsafe practices are identified;
- Review all project environmental permits and identify any gaps or updates required in site documentation or processes;
- Ensure noticeboards and information points along the site hoarding contain appropriate and up-to-date environmental information for staff and the public;
- Liaise with the Client’s LEED practitioner, coordinate document collection, and support site inspections to achieve the targeted LEED Platinum certification.
Requirements
- Degree-qualified Environmentalist (Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline);
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in the construction sector;
- LEED experience is desirable, but not necessary;
- Ability to speak Dutch is desirable, but not necessary;
- Experience working on high-tech, industrial, pharmaceutical, or data centre projects;
- Strong background in site supervision and environmental compliance monitoring;
- Excellent communication, organisational, and reporting skills;
- Ability to influence teams, challenge poor practice, and drive continuous improvement.
